happy january 2019 i hope everyone is doing well this is from charlie
hi everybody :)
this is so late cuz actually i am scared of sending an email and receiving attention even though i ask for it constantly CAN people relate to this (yes). anyway i’m sending out an email with all my shows for january. i have a lot of shows this month and i’m very excited but also in a different sense?? nervous. i am constantly containing multitudes.
shows
Monday, January 7 / 8pm – Wonder Ball (Union Hall – sold out)
i am truly so deeply honored to be on this show. it’s hosted by Jaboukie Young-White, who is functionally famous (daily show correspondent, big mouth, tonight show etc) and it is insane to be on this lineup with like, many of the greats of contemporary BK alt-comedy stars (catherine cohen, ayo edebiri, sydnee washington, as well as uhhhhh frankie cosmos?????? ok what). anyway it’s sold out and also later today but just wanted u guys to know about it because of um……..bragging i guess
Tuesday, January 8 / 8pm — Sparkle Hour (Union Hall – $8-10)
variety show at union hall. hosted by philip markle, will prob be doing the same set as above, though maybe something more fun and crazy. i’ve been doing a bit where i do karaoke to Work From Home but like, funny, and it’s been doing rly well. this show has fareeha kahn (my fave), jo firestone (an icon), devin bockwrath (consistently insane), and other ppl who tbh i don’t rly know
Tuesday, January 8 / 10pm – Pig (Slipper Room – free!)
i luv pig <3 this is a free stand-up show in Manhattan if u can believe. hosted by my faves Peter Smith and Sandy Honig. they are dynamic and this show is a blast and i would heartily recommend seeing this one
Wednesday, January 9 / 11pm – The Special Without Brett Davis (Manhattan Neighborhood Network - free!)
The Special Without is a long-running show on Manhattan local access television, so this is in a like TV studio, and will be filmed for honestly ever so i hope it’s good. this show is like a character showcase. don’t know what character i’m gonna do cuz i’m actually so bad at characters. probably armande, my french grandmother <3
Thursday, January 10 / 8pm – Stacy: It’s 2019 and She’s Pissed (Rebecca’s Bar – Free!)
Stacy!!!!!!!!!! we love stacy!!!!!!! come to this show, this is the show I host. it’s so so fun, the drinks are so cheap, and it’s always an amazing time legit. this month we have Joe Castle Baker, Nadia Pinder, Zine Fumudoh, Kyle Gordon, Sophie Zucker, and Brian Park. srsly this show is so so fun and i look forward to it all month
Friday, January 11 / 7:30pm and 10pm – Jaboukie Young-White at Carolines (Carolines – $27 for 10pm show, the 7:30pm one is sold out)
i’m opening for Jaboukie at Carolines on Friday……. I’m actually freaking out lol i’m so excited………….. what material will i do???? i don't know
Thursday, January 17 / 8pm – SPACE (Mad Tropical – free!)
dope show hosted by my boyfriend (slay) and two of our friends. i’ll be honest i’m only on this cuz of nepotism. unfortunately u do what u have to do to get ahead in this business, and i began a six month relationship to get on this show and it finally paid off.
Saturday, January 19 / 7:30pm – Dr. Phone and Friends (Pine Box Rock Shop - free!)
improv . u guys probably will not believe this but actually everything at this show will be made up on the spot, except the stuff i come up with before to make sure i am actually funny
Tuesday, January 29 / 8pm – Can I Ask You Something (61 Local - free i think!)
stand up show followed by talk show interview. i truly love being interviewed so much so i am v v excited for this show.
other people’s shows that i recommend <3
Friday, January 18 / 9:30pm – I Love You, Forever (Dixon Place)
i say this all the time but i truly believe that francesca d’uva is one of the most talented, unique, and important comedians working in BK today!!!!!!!!!! this is her one woman show and i am so so excited for it. watch out for her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Friday, January 18 / 10:30pm – Ladies Who Ranch (Brooklyn Comedy Collective)
the ladies who ranch are the best. six of the funniest in new york doing truly wild bits.
Monday, January 28 / 8pm – Outcasts (Union Hall)
Fareeha Kahn is the funniest and runs a dope show, where comedians talk about feeling like outcasts. not personally relatable for me but we still stan/love <3
Tuesday, January 29 / 7pm – The Kids are Ok, I Think – They are Doing Solo Shows (The Footlight)
Three of my close friends are doing solo shows. they all have diff vibes, united by a shared thread of talent. this is also hosted by Meaghan Strickland, who is like (and i think i’ve said this in every newsletter i’ve written) the funniest person in the world.
little things i recommend
this week i am sending out two of my favorite vocal performances avail youtube. one thing you have to know about me is that i think vocal talent is the most important thing in human society and i have the utmost respect for supremely talented vocalists. i love singing, and can pull off a musical theater thing, but if i had the talent i would fully drop comedy and pursue music. singing is my actual greatest passion and honestly? that’s that on that.
aretha franklin, “(no, no) i’m losing you” – when aretha franklin died i, like many, did a deep dive on her talent. she was one my most played artists this year, and this is the performance i keep coming back to. her resonance here is insane, as is her belt, which this video (lol) conveniently highlights by providing every note she hits (used to have another vid of this performance without the subtitles but cannot find). u can prob gather from context clues but like, the way she belts the G5 is so, so impressive. the emotion and the performance and her voice here are really unparalleled, in my honest opinion.
TNT Kids do Gandang Gabi, Vice – UGH this video. so basically these are three like 11 year old boys from a Philipino singing competition Tawag ng Tanghalan Kids on a talk show, GGV (Gandang Gabi, Vice), giving a FLAWLESS performance of beyonce’s “Listen” (starts around 1 minute mark) i have my own opinions of their relative talent (i think the boy with the blue jacket is most polished/best overall, has strongest belt; the boy in the blue checkered shirt is a little unpolished and has a sort of nasal belt, but has a fun growl; the boy in the white shirt is straining a little but it works for the song, makes it sound plaintive; all three of these boys EACH have ten times more talent than me and everyone i’ve ever met) please watch this video. if you know more about it please let me know, and share ur thoughts.
that is all
ok thank u everyone. that is everything i have to say for now. much love to all of you <3
