welcome and thank you :)
happy sunday/monday cusp everyone. well here it is: a newsletter from charlie. i really appreciate all of you signing up to witness the inauguration of this project. i’m hugely thrilled and honored that you’ve given me a spot in your inbox, alongside venerable american brands like Kiehl’s. i can one hundred percent promise you that this newsletter will be as good, if not better, for your skin.
this newsletter will have four main components:
1) some writing from me (may change form and tone and style)
2) upcoming shows and projects from me to check out
3) curated content, usually an iconic female performance on youtube. something to watch when you are eating a salad in your office job.
4) cryptocurrency investment advice
my overall goals for this project:
1) to have some fun (feel engaged creative and powerful but also??? safe)
2) sell flat tummy tea
3) other goals but they are unfortunately secret
3a) ok like what if i invent a new genre of writing?? obviously a long shot but wouldn’t that be something
3b) feels unlikely but it is fun to dream!
i will be honest: i am nervous about sending this out because what if my mom thinks it’s bad/what if other peers who i respect think it’s bad/what if someone thinks this is indulgent and drops a sword on me and i die from the sword :(
so that said, if you start to find this newsletter insufferable please feel free to unsubscribe. i set it so that i won’t receive any notifications when people leave, as a radical act of not making myself go insane. asking for attention has always been a little bit psychotic, but feels especially so in this moment, when “pursuing” a “career” (????) feels truly delusional if it’s not like, a career in helping vulnerable people avert climate-related death and misery. i guess i would say my main goal is to have a professional reason to move to LA before it burns down.
so if you’re not down i GET it. i can only ask that you don’t screenshot this and send it to your influential, talented, and verified-on-twitter peers. god forbid any of u know anyone with a sword…….. at the very least, i hope that the act of deleting/marking unread/unsubscribing from this email gives you that small serotonin burst as you continue on your journey to the promised land of a perfectly streamlined life.
future topics i have lined up in my writing:
-kombucha
-formspring/honesty box
-ASMR
-working in an office
-how the jungle is dark but full of diamonds
-asking if this is actually us
-what if phil was of the future
SHOWS I HAVE COMING UP

ok so to be honest this is not the kind of show i normally do in that it is at a comedy club (did not know they still existed)…… come to this if you are 40+
December 6, 9:30pm — Animal Show (Vital Joint)
a VERY fun show hosted by three certified cuties at the soon to be closing (sad but also a classic narrative) Vital Joint, a place where I’ve done countless shows and mics over the past year. this show IS a wonderful community, and it is headlined by Chris Gerhard if you can believe it (???)
December 13, 8pm — Stacy (Rebecca’s)
come to this!!!!!! i host this show with caroline and marissa, and this is the one year anniversary <3 <3 <3 we have a lineup i am so excited for (jaboukie young-white, rebecca o’neal, meaghan strickland, francesca d’uva, natalie rotter-laitman, and ike ufomadu)

December 18, 8pm — Ellen DeGenerous: I Simply Cannot Relate (Union Hall)
i’m opening for my best friend and genius rachel kaly who is doing an hour of her demented Ellen Degeneres but Violent character. it is so, so funny, and rachel is one of the most talented people i know. she wrote a spec script in 4 hours and makes work that is full of heart and anger and sadness and love??????? watch her videos here and come to her show. i am opening alongside Jaboukie Young-White!
December 22, 8pm – The Urban Cafe Variety Slam (The Brick)
hosted by golden sweet and manic comedy boy Kyle Gordon. i’ll be doing a character, maybe someone not gay but don’t hold your breath.
UPCOMING SHOWS BY MY PEERS WHOM I LOVE AND CHERISH
December 8, 10pm — Ladies Who Ranch (The Brick)
squad of six who are so, so funny. truly my faves, some of the most exciting comedic voices in the city in my honest opinion. do NOT miss!
December 9, 8pm — Bible Vers Top (Union Hall)
My friend Zach Zimmerman’s comedy album recording! he grew up evangelical and is now gay which is almost illegal — he has takes
OTHER CONTENT I LOVE
maria bamford is widely known to be one of the most brilliant and singular comedians in the past twenty years (arguably history also imo). she has a sitcom with netflix that is super weird and just got cancelled after three seasons, and several albums of genre-defining stand-up. BUT what i want to recommend is the “maria bamford show”, a lo-fi mostly self-produced web series chronicling the mental breakdown that forced her to move to her parents’ house. maria plays every character. it is deeply inventive in humor, structure, design…… just truly the best. one of the reasons i do comedy. i love her so much.
THAT'S ALL FOR NOW
thanks so much and have a great week :)
p.s. i switched to tinyletter from substack; don't worry there's no difference, i hope that's ok :)
